Micatech Pilot owner, Chuck, shares thoughts about his cases. Chuck took the time to talk with a potential future Micatech owner. Here is what he had to say:
“I think the Micatech Pilot cases are great. The welded construction is bulletproof (no riveted and silicon sealed bottoms like the Touratech/Zega/BMW cases). The side opening design really works well – you can get to gear more easily than digging down through a column of gear from the top. A little care in packing and use of the accompanying liner bags pretty much eliminates the potential problem of things falling out when you open the doors. The right bag tilts the opening up a little when on the sidestand and tends to be the bag for frequently accessing. The other main advantage is you can mount a duffel bag across the top, or strap items on the top of the cases and not have to undo that stuff when you want to get into the cases. I have never detected a leak in the waterproof seal on the door. I have had my share of tip-overs, some on hard rock on Utah backroads like the White Rim Trail and the cases have been rock solid and undamaged. I have the large set of 102 liters per pair, which is a lot of storage and can obviate the need for a top case for many trips. I liked the Pilots enough that I put a pair of the V2 cases (37 liters each) on a G650GS Sertao.”
Wanted to let you know how much I am enjoying my new pilot cases. After having a set of Jesse bags on my prior GS I knew that this time around I wanted something different as I was always struggling with getting things out without unloading everything from the top. Your cases have more than solved that problem and the build quality and mounting system is absolutely the best of any bags I have seen.View Project
“When I purchased my BMW R1200GS, I wanted to buy strong, stylish, solid motorcycle cases that were easy to mount and remove, yet are water tight and dust free. Once the cases were removed, I did not want to have a bunch of metal tracks all over the back end of the bike, which would detract from its overall lines. The only cases available for the 1200GS that have an unobtrusive mounting system are the original BMW cases; however, these cases mount with four easily broken plastic hooks.
Then, I learned about the unique Micatech mounting system. It’s strong, yet elegant. Unlike other mounting systems, your mounts have the advantage of being made of aluminum and stainless steel and will never rust, plus I’m hard pressed to even see the mounts once the cases are removed from the motorbike.View Project
“I was given a chance to field-test a set of prototype Micatech saddlebags in the summer of 2003. This was shortly before the start of the 2003 Iron Butt Rally. I’m normally loath to make a major equipment change so soon before a big ride but the specifications on these bags intrigued me. The construction appeared as good as other major aftermarket brands and there were some innovative engineering features on the mount system. I decided to sell my BMW cases and give these a try. I was not disappointed.
The Micatech bags are cavernous. The right bag easily holds a full-face helmet. I found that I can fit all my riding gear in the cases (full-face helmet, Aerostich RoadCrafter(tm) suit, and Aerostich “Combat Touring” boots) without any problems. Despite this internal size, the bigs tuck in neatly behind my legs while riding and carrying a passenger is no problem. They look wide from the rear but do not extend wider than the cylinders so lane-splitting in California does not pose any additional challenges.View Project
“I love the cases and am delighted with how they have performed…. Still can’t imagine a better system than the Micatechs.”

“I love the Pilot cases and they seldom come off of my 2005 R1200GS. On road or off, commuting or touring they are a great addition to my GS.”

“The bags are great. They work perfectly. I like everything about them. I have been telling lots of people about them. They are the best bags I have ever owned, hands down. Your bags make the competition’s bags look like high school metal shop projects.

“The cases are SUPER!!! The R1200 GS Adventure was built for these cases (that’s my way of putting it). They perfectly match the fat fuel tank in size, color, and texture. Installation was a breeze, top quality bracket parts.
These cases look great and work great and thanks again for the shop visit.”

“Bob, Well after 30 days on the road we’ve finished shooting Food Network’s Feasting on Asphalt 2. I wanted to personally thank you for allowing me to beta test your prototype Micatech top case. I’m very happy to report that it performed flawlessly under some adverse conditions. Not a drop of moisture inside despite the monsoon like rains we encountered on several occasions. The mounting system you devised remained rock solid throughout the ride. On two occasions I put a wrench on it to see what may have vibrated loose but could not manage to get even the slightest turn out of any part.
Needless to say the Pilot Side Cases were trouble free and afforded me the most luggage capacity of any bike on the trip. The capacity of the top case is massive and it sure was nice to have that much room for camera gear and everything else that I needed quick access to. Despite its size I noticed no buffeting or drag when on high speed runs. The three cases are well designed and seem to work in harmony with one another. I sincerely hope that you guys release this top case soon as anyone who appreciates the Pilot side cases will surely want to add the top case to their luggage set. Thanks for your dedication to quality products.”

“I’ve put about 8,000 miles on the bike with the Micatech side cases. I’ve ridden all over northern California in all types of weather, traffic, and road conditions (including some off-road). The cases have been great! They are very functional, the mounting system is quite stout, and the installation directions are top notch.
Before buying, I’d had a concern about being able to split traffic with the cases. Without the cases my handlebars and mirrors were what worried me, with the cases, it is still just the handlebars and mirrors that worry me when lane splitting.”

“I have to tell you, I make my living as a technical writer, and have spent many years writing manufacturing processes for the aerospace industry. I was very impressed with the level of detail and the clarity in your instructions. You take your customers through a step by step process in a very clear and orderly manner, with pictures to boot! Great job.
Everyone who sees them is very impressed, with the workmanship, the quality, the machine work, and the size. I’ve put about 500 miles on them in the last week, and the amount they hold is impressive indeed. I also got caught in a driving Florida summer storm yesterday, 3” of rain in one hour. I had a few thousand dollars worth of camera equipment in the right bag. I had to say I was concerned. I rode through some deep puddles, and next to cars doing the same. Water was hitting the cases from up top, from below, form every angle imaginable, and after the shower, when I opened the bags, not a single drop of water got inside. It seems I worried for naught. I don’t know that I would immerse them and expect that, but if they can stand a tropical rain storm, they’ll stand up to just about everything I can throw at them.View Project
“I’d like to say thank you for marketing such a great case. I’ve had my pilot cases for almost a year and a half now and they look and act just like they did the day I installed them. I’ve taken all over Texas, made several out of state trips to Colorado and Nebraska. The cases have provided me with plenty of storage space and are very durable, even on the dirt trails of the Ozarks. I’ve included some photos. My father and I took a trip to Lincoln, Nebraska and also a photo of a stop I made on the way to Colorado. Thanks Again.”

“Went to Alaska and Canada in June with my Micatechs. I rode the Dalton Highway, Denali Highway and the Dempster Highway. After living with them every day for a month, I’ve got to tell you that I love them even more now. What a product! They held up great, even after 3 drops. One of the cases has a ding on the bottom and the bracket on that side was slightly bent…but that’s it. No big deal. I don’t think anyone but me would even notice. These things are bullet proof. Got lots of looks from other riders, too. One guy from San Diego said he was gonna order a set as soon as he got home. I returned a set of cases from Brand X to get the Micatechs. Best decision I ever made.”View Project
“I rode over 23,000 miles in 6 months through 15 countries as I rode from New Hampshire to the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia, Argentina. My Micatech V2 panniers and Micatech Top Box held strong the whole trip. Installation was a breeze and they added function and style to my Kawasaki KLR650. I dropped the bike 30+ times and got in 2 car accidents. The boxes never dented and they always remained waterproof. They had plenty of room for all my gear and the side loading made it easy to find what I needed. With matching locks, security was simple and never a concern. Quick disconnects make it simple to remove the boxes to fit through narrow doorways or bring them into hotel rooms. The powdercoat finish is durable and an excellent surface for stickers. Plus… they have built in beer holders – a must for any trip!”View Project
“This summer I had the pleasure of traveling from Toronto to Alaska for a 4 week adventure, camping and riding for a 62 year old means you want your gear to be clean, dry and serviceable at the end of a long day in the saddle.
The Dempster, Denali, Dalton Highways were all on the schedule for this trip and research helped me to understand the road and weather conditions I would encounter. In fact I had it all; dust filled days, rain and even snow; gravel, dirt, mud, and asphalt.
My Micatech cases never let me down even after two low speed tip overs where the cases took much of the impact with the ground they continued to keep everything dry and dust free.
